I’m sure all quilters have a bucket list of quilts they would like to make one day: a Dear Jane, a Double Wedding Ring, etc. One of mine is actually text quilts! When the lovely Sherri Noel offered up spots on her blog hop for her brand new book, I jumped! Read all the way to the bottom for a chance to win a copy of her book! I have always loved ‘reading’ quilts with text, seeing into the soul of the maker. They obviously chose a specific quote or line for a reason.
Looking through her book, I instantly fell in love with all of the projects. I chose the Loving You Quilt for a few reasons. I wanted something smaller that I knew I could get done between customer quilts. I wanted something that really focused on the text, and little use of patchwork. I also need more quilts to hang on the wall. This project is perfect!
Looking at Sherri’s sample, the quote is sweet and romantic. The colors of Aqua Grunge Dot is just perfect. I decided to pick a sweet romantic quote and choose something that is somewhat short, able to fit in the space. I was going to go with a Disney quote, but the majority of them are too long and I didn’t want the words to be small. So I opted for Bridget Jones Diary instead.
I really liked how Sherri used multiple fonts in hers. The book has 7 applique alphabets! If I could arrange it correctly, I wanted to try something like that too. Part of my day job is creating graphics for a quilt shop. I use Adobe InDesign and Photoshop regularly, so here is a probably way too analytical process for me to create the quilt! Her alphabets are awesome in that they come reversed for applique! I created a document the true size and flipped the alphabets so I could read them properly. Using InDesign I could scale the letters and play with the spacing to get exactly what I wanted. With a couple of the alphabets, the letters are made to overlap to create the cursive look. Sorry for the watermark in this image but if you love her alphabets, buy her book!
Once I had my design, it was time to choose fabrics! I really wanted the main patchwork to be from my stash and I found this gorgeous piece of Art Gallery Fabrics I had saved, which worked perfectly for the romantic quote. I ordered a matching bundle of wool felt from Benzie Design on Etsy. It matched perfectly! I should have used the darker green for the third line, but oh well. Cutting out the applique on this felt was a breeze. I used a regular large pair and for the inside parts of the letters, used a small pair of serrated scissors. No fraying whatsoever! I did decide to stitch down the wool applique. I used a blanket stitch on the first line, which I didn’t really like. The blanket stitch flattened the wool letters and almost rounded them off. I did a simple straight stitch on the others which I like much better. It keeps the volume of the applique!
Iron the pieces on and then to my favorite part – the quilting! I had just finished a very large client quilt and putting this wall hanging on my longarm was very silly looking. Tons of fun to just quilt my heart out though! What do you think of the quilting? Is it too much for this little wall hanging? Love it so much you wish I can quilt for you? I would love to quilt for you, contact me here!
I loved this process so much I started a second wall hanging (with better readability I might add ) . It still needs quilting, but the row of hearts on the bottom of Sherri’s design got me thinking. Who has two hearts? Why the Doctor of course! The Tenth Doctor will always be my favorite and I took one of his fun, well known phrases to make a wall hanging. I think I will do the same fun quilting, after finishing another large customer quilt in line.
Thank you to Sherri for letting me participate in this blog hop. And double thanks for you, to reading to the bottom. We are having a giveaway! **Giveaway now closed**

I LOVE this idea!! One of my favorites is “You had me at Hello”
And then we just all start crying!
For my newly remodeled kitchen, I’d love to do one that says, “Keep your face always toward the sunshine and shadows will fall behind you.” (Whitman)
Always look on the bright side, right?
It is so fun to think of the different sayings and quotes that would be perfect done this way! I would SO love to win a copy of Sheri’s book! I’ll definitely have to do one for my daughter and new son-in-law – whatever quote she chooses!
I know! Such a great way to share quotes. So many to choose from, just need to make sure they fit the space!
A quote I like – How did it get so late so soon?
Hi Kathy!! That’s a fun one!
Looks fabulous and thanks for sharing the story behind your words!
Thank you, Sherri! I know I will be returning to your book in the future!
Awesome colors and love the different texts
Thanks Jen!
Lovin Touchin squeezin …very cute ty for sharing
That would be a fun one! Thank you!
“LOOKING GOOD!” THANKS FOR SHARING
Thanks, Linda!
Oh my goodness. I think our wall hanging is absolutely gorgeous. Oh to quilt like that. Maybe someday. I’m still trying to decide on the words I want to put on a project for my daughter and son in law, but I do like Sherri’s choice for today: and suddenly all the love songs were about you. Sweet for newlyweds I think.
Thank you for the kind words! I do love Sherri’s original, it definitely inspired me to choose this project!
Cute wall hanging! I can’t think of a quote right now, but I love this idea.
It did take me a long time to narrow my choices and pick this one. Thanks!
I think my son’s favorite is “Bowties are cool.” I made him several bowties and he wears one every time he goes anywhere.
Yes! Love it!
I love your wall hanging. I would make these for my nieces and nephews maybe Dare to Dream or Reach for the Stars or Failure is not an Option.
Thank you! Yes, they are the perfect size for an inspirational quote with a handmade touch
I would love to make one for my granddaughter that says, “You are my Sunshine”. My other choice would be to make a pillow for my husband’s semi that says, “I’m still wearing the smile you left me.” Thanks for sharing the book with us!
Thank you, Joyce! I love the smile quote. I haven’t heard that before.
A great quote, don’t you just love them! Mine would be “Hope lives here”!
That’s a sweet one, would work well in any home!
For my craft room – OUTER ORDER, INNER CALM.
Haha, that’s fun! Reminds me I need to clean my sewing space up a bit.
Laissez le bon temps rouler
That would look great in one of the cursive scripts!
Wonderful! A great quote: “Love is the goal, Life is the journey”
I can imagine a great layout, changing sizes and alphabets with that one!
Gardening keeps me sane,
So does quilting!
Hi Nancy! That’s sweet. We all need to be sane somehow!
Loved the Dr. Who reference – had me giggling!
I was happy I could get it to fit!
Such fun! Love your quilting on your piece!
Thank you, Theresa!
So grateful I got to see it in person. Here are three quotes that I will use. “Be still and know”, “Thank you, Father” and “I am, the alpha and the omega…”
Love your work.
Thank you so much, Pam! So kind of you! I love how this wall hanging can be adapted for so many sayings all based on the fabric and alphabet choices.
I’ve always thought this quote from “Return to Me” should be on a pillow or something: “Hairy legs are your only link to reality.” 🙂
I somehow think “Return to Me” might be more well received than “Hairy Legs” haha
Love the Dr Who version! I used to be a #11 fan but now #10 is my favorite
I like #11 a lot, but #10 will always be my favorite.
Great post and love the Dr Who version! My quote would be “Peace begins with a Smile” – Mother Teresa
Lovely! Thank you, Lee!
Your quilting is wonderful! Maybe I would use, “A little less conversation, a little more action”. Or is that too long?
If you use ‘conversation’ on a single line, I bet it could fit. Thank you!
It’s a little long, but my favorite saying for wedding day is “May you always be as happy as you are today”❤️
You could always make the background longer to be sure it fits!
Today I Choose Joy.
Everyday choose joy! Thanks, Terri!
All You Need Is LOVE
Perfect quote for this wall hanging! Thanks, Susan!
Happiness is growing old together.
Sweet! Thanks Nancy!
I love Dr. Seuss .. might be a bit long but I’d work it out someway …
“Today you are You. That is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
Probably too long. Perhaps just the first two lines!
My piece would simply say “Blessed” because I certainly feel that I am! I am blessed beyond my understanding or earning of them!
Love all of these projects so much!

Simple and Sweet, thanks Kathy!
