What I do
Hello! I’m Ellen Ault and let me step up on my thread box and say I am a quilter! I am the current president for the Tampa MQG. Working in what has been termed modern traditionalism, I create original quilt designs with roots to classic quilt blocks. I play with proportion, color, and layout to reflect upon a theme for each quilt. I create a narrative where each quilt reflects a story in an original way. My quilts are not art quilts. They are functional quilts meant to be on a bed, covering a child, and giving warmth. My visual style is influenced from my love of whimsy. My work reflects my interests from Dr. Seuss, The Muppets, Disney, and Garfield the Cat. I find inspiration from video games, my family, and my students.
I long arm quilt for others, hopefully for you! I teach quilting at local quilt shops such as Happy Apple Quilts. I am also the Social Media Guru for Happy Apple Quilts and the Florida Quilting Center.
My work has been published in the UK magazine Love Patchwork and Quilting and in the national magazine STUFFED. I have had quilts hang in a national shows, such as AQS Daytona Beach, AQS Des Moines and AQS Chatanooga. My work has been seen in multiple galleries in the Tampa area. I sell my work at conventions in Tampa and Orlando areas, as well as online.
I teach computer animation at The Art Institute of Tampa. You can download my CV here. To see my animation work and work of my students, please click on the Animation tab on the left, connected to the About Menu button.
